Anointing of the Sick

The Catholic Church has its own rite for the sick, attested to by St. James 5: 14-15

 

 

Anointing of the Sick

“Last Rites”  – What has been referred to the Last Rites in the past is actually the reception of these three sacraments: 

 

  1. A priest hearing the confession of the sick person (if able).  – Sacrament of Reconciliation. 
  1. A priest anointing the sick person with holy oil. – Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.
  2. The sick person’s reception of Holy Communion (if able). – Sacrament of the Eucharist.

 

 

Please do not wait to call the priest to receive the Anointing of the Sick and the other two Sacraments.  There may be times when a priest is not available to administer these Sacraments.

 

 

Call immediately:   (instructions follow)

  • upon knowing that a surgery or medical procedure is needed.
  • when a chronic illness worsens or has been diagnosed.
  • if the health status declines for someone who is homebound or in a care facility.
  • Please do not wait until the final hours before death to call a priest.

 

 

How to Schedule an Anointing for the Sick:

 

  1. Call 740-345-9874; select option 7
  2. Leave a message.  Include contact name and phone number.
  3. Debby Shelly will return your call.
  4. She will contact the priest and schedule a visit. 

 

 

Additionally, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be celebrated quarterly throughout the year, following all the weekend Masses.  Please take advantage of these times when the need arises.

 

 

Anointing of the Dying

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given to…those at the point of departing this life.  A preparation for the final journey.

Anointing of the Dying consists of:

  1. A priest hearing the confession of the dying person (if able). – The Sacrament of Reconciliation. 
  2. A priest anointing the dying person with holy oil. – Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. 
  3. The dying person’s reception of Holy Communion (if able). – Sacrament of the Eucharist. 

 

 

Please do not wait to call the priest until a few hours before death, to receive the Anointing of the Sick and the other two Sacraments.  There may be times when a priest is not available to administer these Sacraments.

 

 

Call immediately:   (instructions follow)

  • upon knowing that an illness is terminal.
  • when someone first enters hospice.
  • when someone has entered the last stages of dying.
  • in emergency situations when someone is in immediate danger of death.
